I was first trained and worked in Western Medicine where we treated illness and disease based on what we saw, felt, and measured. Western Medicine operates in a rather concrete, physical world where everything is pretty much black and white.
Chinese Medicine operates a bit differently. Chinese Medicine includes black and white concrete values, but it also includes different shades of gray. There is a lot of interaction, integration, and concepts that are not even physical in nature (aka the San Jaio and the tripple burner). There is also a broad spectrum of treatment options available that are used such as acupuncture, qigong, massage, herbs, & diet.
Chinese Medicine also believes that everything in the body, mind, and soul works together and you can't treat a person without treating the whole person. This means that treatment plans will usually include actions to help the body, mind, and spirit.

Medical Qigong is one of the arms of Chinese Medicine and is known as "Energy Medicine". In this arm, there is a spectrum of energies you can act on and use to help get a person healthy and well. In fact, there are many different shades of gray between the more concrete and physical matter of the body and the more subtle/energetic level of the spirit.
it was through my Qigong training I started to recognize and work with this spectrum energy. I learned how to sense and assess different health problems based on this spectrum of energy. Over time, I improved my ability to work in this spectrum of energy and determine problems that were more concrete and already physical (such as arthritis or cancer) vs problems where energy was just stagnant, stuck, or was not flowing to where it needed to be.

If you are Medical Qigong practitioner and are giving Medical Qigong treatments, the concept about the body and spirit having layers between them is important because you can often treat health disturbances before they become a full fledge health problem. In addition, you can work on chronic health problems and prevent them from getting worse, as well as work to dissipate the problem and move it back on the energy scale so it becomes less of a problem.
Why and how can Qigong work? As we all learned in High School, matter and energy are interchangeable (E=MC2). It is just that Chinese Medicine has been actively using this concept in its health care practice for over 5,000 years.
Energy medicine works. There is a broad spectrum of energy layers in a persons body. Energy medicine is about working in these various layers to get (or keep) a person well and healthy.
